ADHD / ADD Therapy for Adults and Children
Research shows that a structured cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) program can significantly reduce symptoms of ADHD / ADD.
The approach varies depending upon the age of the individual. For children and younger adolescents, parents are much more involved in the therapy sessions and with "coaching" the kids during the week to help them employ the techniques learned in the therapy sessions.
Adults with attention problems often have difficulty in the workplace, organizing their home, and keeping relationships in harmony. Their impulsive behaviors, distractibility, and forgetfulness cause stress, irritability, and self-esteem issues. Studies show that adults who learn the particular skills in this treatment program show significant improvement of their ADD /ADHD symptoms.
Although this approach is highly supportive and therapeutic, it is a skill-based approach, where individuals learn specific, hands-on techniques to manage their ADD / ADHD. The therapy course usually includes 8-16 weekly sessions (50 minutes each), and participants learn a new skill to practice each week. In each session, participants also get a chance to share their experiences in applying the techniques, pitfalls they've overcome, challenges they've had, etc.
3 Primary Areas of Focus:
1.) Organization and planning
a.) Prioritizing and organizing multiple tasks
b.) Managing overwhelming tasks
c.) Organizing paperwork
2.) Distractibility
a.) Staying on task
b.) Completing tasks
c.) Stopping procrastination
3.) Associated mood issues, self-esteem, stress, and anxiety
a.) Improving mood
b.) Reducing defensiveness
c.) Reducing stress and anxiety
d.) Improving self-esteem
